Today is the first "warm" day of the year. It's hovering above the 40 degree mark and feels fantastic. The windows are open with the cats occupying some of them. All that is missing is the sound of the robins. Unfortunately, this feeling will be fleeting, as we're slated for more snow tonight and tomorrow. *pout*
One of my favourite sounds in the world is that of one of our cats, Coupland, snoring. It is the sweetest, silliest noise.
The goals for the day:
*Take Philosophy of Feminism quiz
*Read this week's materials for Queer Migrations
*Write paper for QM
*Prepare presentation for QM
Oy. Tall order, considering it's already 1:00 pm.
Well, off to it.
What's the best thing about today?
The best thing about today was the genesis, development, completion, and submission of my first philosophy (of feminism) paper. All done in 8 hours in one day. I'm not overly proud of it, because I began to lose direction after awhile, but it will suffice. The topic? Glad you asked. I titled mine, "Intersectionality and Women of Color Within the Feminist Movement". We had several topics to choose from and the discussion of women of color was particularly interesting to me, so that's what I chose.
I might post it after it's graded.
Next up, a 5-page paper and presentation for my Queer Migrations class, due Mar. 6.

Finally getting over the flu. I have been sick more this winter than ever in my life. I don't know what it is.
Now I am craving Vegetarian Banfi (peanut stew) and palm wine from African Hut. Delivery please? Hah.

With the completion of week two of my Philosophy of Feminism class, and recognizing that I am struggling with, well, not so much the broader concepts but more the subtle nuances, I'm considering trying to form a study group. I'm finding that I haven't much to contribute to our discussion boards for the class, and out of 8 questions on each of two quizzes, I've gotten at least one incorrect. Frustrating and unlike me. So, hopefully at least a few folks will want to get together maybe Monday or Tuesday evenings. I learn well in a collective environment, bouncing ideas off of each other and even arguing a bit when we don't agree.
For future reference, self, don't take a philosophy class via online forum. It's not conducive to your effective learning.
In other news, we're still looking for a dog, as Stewart was adopted out before we were able to get back to the humane society to officially apply for adoption (just one day!). I've found this beauty via Petfinder.com down in Bristol, WI. Her story broke my heart (6 years old, two owners already, second one passed away recently) and her eyes are just gorgeous. Plus, I have a real soft spot for Huskies already.
I do know some huskies are not good with cats, but Blu isn't noted as being such. I'm thinking of calling the foster home for her today to discuss specifics of our home environment and her personality.
Not too much else going on this week. My dear H. is fighting the flu, so we've been in the house most of the weekend trying to nurse her back to health.
Today, I am thinking of going shopping, to take advantage of likely winter clearances.
Good day.

Last night, for our first session of Queer Migrations, we watched Paris is Burning! Those of you who know me know that this is one of my all-time favourite films. The odd thing is that I, for some reason, walked into class thinking, "I wonder if we'll watch Paris is Burning tonight?" Halfway through class, Bri popped it in for our viewing pleasure.
This time watching it, I took very different thoughts away from it. Viewing it 8 years or so ago, it was just a campy and fun drag film. This time, it was poignant. Raising issues of class, race, and heteronormativity, the film left me feeling sad and somewhat ashamed of my privilege. White guilt doesn't help anyone, but it's there nonetheless.
And, for those of you who are local drag enthusiasts, my professor is the artist formerly known as "Rydeher Johnson" (sp?), a king from the Miltown Kings drag troupe. Zie also seems to be quite the word whiz, which is awesome. Even I was challenged by some of the terms zie used in class.
I think this semester is going to be more challenging and a lot more fun than my courses were last semester. There are intelligent folks in my classes and the professors, while seemingly kind and friendly, are clear about their high expectations. I anticipate learning quite a bit.

We visited Stewart today and OH is he a sweet one! I love him. His personality is awesome; he listens well; knows basic commands; and is softie. Oh I want him! We have to talk about owning a dog a little more and also consult our landlord, but I have high hopes.
Dogdogdog. I'm obsessed.

The new Miss Kittin (solo) album is yummy. Is Justice really a CHRISTIAN electro producer? ???
I want to go look at this dog today:
The other dog I wanted to see today from the humane society, a 2-year-old Gordon Setter named Maggie, well, I guess she was popular because she was gone just hours after she appeared on the website.
Aww Stewie. He is so cute.
The nameless band is practicing downstairs today. I just finished making lunch for them, which is getting COLD because they won't stop and come up! Also I am studying today for my Philosophy of Feminism class (the online one). Also also watching football--Patriots vs. Chargers and then Packers vs. Giants.
That is all for now.

I need not have fretted about my final exam in Women and Criminal Justice; my professor just emailed to tell me I got an A in her class. Hooray me.
Next week, I start classes again, with Queer Migrations on Wednesday nights and Philosophy of Feminism online. I'm really damn excited. I hope to find more seriously dedicated students in these classes...perhaps even form a study group or two.
I've rediscovered Anthony Rother (electro artist) tonight. A little cheesy, but very good. Ravey even, yet dark.
Here is a photo from my Friday night at 80s night this past weekend (with the birthday girl)...
